How it all Started
The inspiration for this project took root over 20 years ago, in the early days following Sarah’s brain injury at just 12 years old. After her brain hemorrhage, I sat by her bedside as she drifted in and out of a coma, wondering what her future might hold. Once she overcame the critical phase and began Gamma-Knife treatments, we were faced with an array of daunting challenges. To cope with the emotional toll, I began documenting the “episodes” of our healing and recovery journey—a cathartic way to navigate the uncertainty.
As we delved into learning about brain injury and confronting the worries for my child, I pushed myself to stay one or two steps ahead, determined to give Sarah the best chance possible. In doing so, I recognized a profound truth about my own experience as a brain injury survivor. I had spent years masking and concealing my struggles, never truly confronting my reality because I simply didn’t know how. Determined to change this for Sarah, I resolved to meet the challenges head-on, armed with the best tools science, medicine, research, and education could provide.
Through countless struggles, surprises, and setbacks, Sarah and I forged a partnership that transformed our journey. Together, we found ways to persevere and thrive. Now, with the invaluable combination of knowledge, lived experience, and education, I feel a deep sense of responsibility to help the next brain injury survivor start their journey with greater clarity and support—so they can do better than we ever imagined.
